Knut "s/t" CD
9/10 - [ Hydrahead ]
At last, this "new" EP (recorded back in 1999) sees the light and unleashes a more aggressive and involved Knut. The delivery is more technical with a wider range of approaches, from the normally dense chunkiness to heavy, metallic breaks or noisy discordance. And the drumming is ballistic! The percussion definitely drives this material with a frantic delivery, constantly on the go. Amazing work, I'm stunned. The vocals are unwavering in their slightly distorted screams. I think the main difference here is simply stronger songwriting. Everything is more distinct and memorable than in the past, while still obviously Knut. "The Will to Please" is slower and immeasurably more destructive in mood, while "You Deserve Me" was recorded back in 1998 at the band's practice space and sounds great! This is one dark track... The recording is raw yet forceful, with a grating guitar/vocal attack, dense distorted bass, and resonant drums. The bass mostly adds low-end density, it's hard to hear it aside from the moments where it pops out just to show that the tone is amazing. It could use some cleaning up, but it works out fine. Nice lyrics. They're seamless abstract passages for the most part, but "You Deserve Me" is absolutely brutal, "Split your sixteen year ass in two unlock your back door for me turn it around your white ass shines it bleeds you deserve me you're the one I need," I mean... shit. What can you say to that? A slick layout makes great use of icy textures and metallic silver ink for added effect. This is just an awesome EP. I can't wait for the next full-length now. Knut's going to turn a lot of heads in the future. Highly recommended.
