Knut
Terraformer (Hydra Head)

Knut is no more. Long live Knut. This long running topper of European hard music decided to stop touring and focus for a 100% on making their mathematically worked out metallic hardcore in a studio and perfect their sound. And that is exactly what they did with this amazing new full length “terraformer”. Like their previous albums “bastardizer” and “challenger”, Knut chose again for a title with much bombast and character. Terraformer is one of the best albums of 2005 and one of the few maybe the only one that really got me floored from start to finish. The character of this new one is still all about brutality and unconventional hard hitting mathcore. In what aspect is this onen then new or different? A lot of songs could fit perfectly on “challenger”, but are worked out to perfection. In these new songs Knut uses also a lot more terrifying noise, feedback, static and samples and not to forget a good part of these songs also have more stretched out soundscapes of repeating killer riffs or moody and dark slowed down soft parts. Don’t let “soundscapes” or “slow parts” turn you away from this record, because if you like what Knut did in the past, you will surely be glad to hear what they’re doing here. I admist: I’ve been drooling over the fast and brutal mathcore more than over the other aspects, but god damn, EVERYTHING fits and is classy in a sick sort of way. There’s a Sunno)) legacy to be dealt with, there’s noise to be taken in with the mathcore, there’s so much more to take, but in the end…….it comes from Knut and it’s one of the best European bands of hard music. Ever. [rik]
