Knut / Challenger
(Hydrahead Records)
First things first: I am way more impressed with this release than I was with their last full length, Bastardizer. Quite simply, they grab the attention of the listener a lot easier this time around. To describe this european groups sound on this recording as easily as I can would be to state, in my opinion, a mathy/tech sound, not unlike earlier Botch, venturing into a Coalesce-esque guitar writing ala Functioning on Impatience era, while still holding on to the same dark, drawn out Neurosis feel, but adding heaps of Breach influence. This is one of the better releases Hydrahead has put out lately. I am thoroughly impressed with the start/stop intro in El Niño, the moody, acoustic track 58.788, and I still can't believe that March is almost 14 minutes long! And it doesn't get boring! I have a feeling that their next release will blow the socks off of a lot of people if they keep up with this progression.
