"Challenger"
CD/LP

METAL MANIACS ( continued ii )

with its beyond-menacing one-riff elephant-march, that collapse is well underway, and even if the following acoustic-laden cooldown of "58.788" offers some (much-needed) respite, it mostly serves to further dislocate the mind/self from the panoramic vortex at hand. "Ice Will" lurches in and quickly out, the last jabs of humanity, before 20 stultifying minutes of so-aptly-titled-it's-fuckin'-ridiculous closer "March." Fuck, there's no way out, and there never was...your fate is sealed.

Converge's career apex Jane Doe might've raised the stakes for elevating metalcore beyond blind fury 'n' rage to something approaching life-altering/damaging art roughly one year ago, but Knut have equaled - even *surpassed*, in most respects - that high-bar mark with Challenger: no small feat, indeed, by every stretch of the imagination; about the only task more difficult is prying your feeble frame/heart/brain from the rubble. Damn near the most devastating decibels currently going.
