Knut "Challenger" CD
8/10 - [ Hydra Head ]
Once again Knut returns with a new record that takes their past and builds an angrier, more intricate monster from its framework. "Challenger" is their most extreme and diverse effort yet. Drastic tempo changes, unusual time signatures, plodding rhythms, grinding speeds, complete discordance, long songs, short song: it's all here. This time the rhythm section carries a great deal of the weight, even though the guitars are mixed relatively loud in comparison (not in a bad way). The bass tone is phenomenal and always plays an important role, and the percussion is just fucking excellent - always knowing when to place emphasis with either a simple pattern, an intense blast, or a flurry of insane fills. The vocals are simply unrelenting distorted screams, perfectly suited for the sundry musical assault the band throws forth. Especially intriguing in the songwriting department are the subtle melodies and choppy rhythmic patterns of "El Niño", and the devastating yet eerily harmonious "Neon Guide". "58.788" even brings in some acoustic guitars - an extremely unexpected surprise that works out beautifully. As with their "Bastardiser" full-length, the final track here is an epic beast, this time clocking in at a mighty 19:51.
